Mindset Changes Everything

I had a couple of different thoughts today, but ultimately finished the day thinking about mindset. What is mindset and why is it so important? A quick Google search will term up a definition stated as

“The established set of attitudes held by someone”

While this is a pretty solid definition I believe it goes much deeper than that. It goes back into the why we do things. If you do not know why you are doing something, your mindset about that particular thing or desire to do it is going to be totally different.

This plays out in all things from the way you eat, your work, your commitment to exercise, church, etc. etc. If we know why it is we are doing something then we are going to have the right mindset when we get to that activity. Without it you will struggle to complete the task at hand or lose interest before it is completed. So how do you get the right mindset?

I believe the first step is to identify the purpose. Why is it you are doing this? When I started journaling last year it was to experiment. Over and over again I read about the benefits of just a few minutes a day journaling so I figured I would give it a shot. As the months passed I realized the benefit of it. I quickly identified two key benefits that I took away from it. First, it gave me a place to release some thoughts in my mind and secondly it gave me something to look back on to remember details that I may have forgotten. Now that I’ve seen the benefits and value of it, it is easy for me to sit down and journal each day. Some days I still miss, but most of the time it is consciously and usually not more than 1 or 2 days because I truly miss doing it.

As you embark on this new task, journey or plan, keep that purpose in mind and keep pushing forward. When you get stuck you will need to look back on that purpose to recheck where you are at. Maybe you started a workout regimen, a new way of eating or took on a new opportunity somewhere. Why did you do it? When you get stuck focus on the why and I guarantee you will get through it.

Last piece is consistency. Keep after it, when it gets hard, take a break, but get back to it. You are going to have to get uncomfortable, get stuck somewhere, but keep going. That is how you grow, get stronger and meet those goals you set for yourself.

Get yourself in the right mindset and you will achieve whatever you set out to do. And do not let negative talk creep in, keep the positive message going and if you have to say it to yourself everyday.
